Understanding the Father

Our God is called God our Father. In Matthew six verse nine, Jesus teaches how we should pray. When we pray, we are to pray to our Father. So, we are to focus on praying to THE FATHER. It means we need to see ourselves as His children and it then requires of us to understand who God is as Father.

Jesus goes on to say: “Hallowed be Thy Name.” God as Father is set apart and therefore, we cannot use earthly fathers to explain God as Father. We need to go to Jesus the perfect Son, who is the exact revelation of the Father.

In Luke chapter six verse thirty-six, we are told to be merciful AS our Father is merciful. God as Father is merciful. Mercy is defined as compassionate; one who can sympathize with you. In the Hebrew language the word ‘mercy’ comes from another word also translated in English as mercy, and it means to love, to love deeply, tender mercies and tender affection. Mercy describes our Father as one who has a tender affection towards His children. It means our Father feels for our pain, our struggles we go through, as well as feel deep love for us.

God’s mercy towards humanity denotes the same kind of divine protection that a baby has in its mother’s womb. The best way to understand our Father’s mercy is in the imagery of a father towards a child, or a child in a mother’s womb. Living in the mercies of God is like living in the womb of a mother. Here, tender affection and deep love is understood. It causes us to view God differently - not as one who is far and unconcerned with our trauma and so forth, but actually feels for us as a father feels for his child.
