The book of Deuteronomy chapter 2 informs us that Israel was not to possess the land that belonged to the children of Esau. Esau was the 1st born son of Isaac and brother of Jacob. The 1st born had a birthright, which meant that he was the one who would receive a double portion of the inheritance, manage the estate and become the leader of the family in the absence of the father.
According to the law of Moses, every 1st born that opens the womb had to be redeemed with a certain amount of money. In the New Testament we are told that we were not REDEEMED with silver or gold, but by the precious blood of Jesus Christ. If we were redeemed it also means we are 1st born sons of God. We are born of God and God is our Father!
Therefore, we are to manage out Father's estate in His absence in the earth, give leadership to the world and live in the inheritance. According to scripture, Esau DESPISED his birthright and sold it for food after hunting.
What is God saying in Deuteronomy?
We are to pass through the land and children of Esau. There is a mindset in the church that is similar to Esau. Children of God whom have hearts/minds that despise think very little of the position, authority and blessings that are in Christ! Those that despise will easily give up (sell) their birthright to satisfy their cravings of the flesh.
)e.g. We get saved, find a partner, and suddenly we LOSE our INTEREST in concerning who we are in Christ.) This is the Esau mindset! When we have this mindset we are rejected by God from living in the blessing of our birthright, experientially, as 1st born sons of God.
This results in, that we never become significant leaders in Christ in the world (like Joseph). We don't fully enjoy the inheritance and right to mange the estate.
We must start to VALUE our position in Christ and pursue to LIVE practically in Christ and function in His kingdom. This message: Doctrine of Christ (Part 2) - Session 8 deals with these issues!
